Alkaline Foods and an Alkaline Diet

Alkaline food was part of Tony Robbins description of Supergreens created by Dr. Robert O. Young. Tony later spoke about Supreme Greens as the ACID AND ALKALINE drink of choice. Now Tony has his own brand of green drink called Inner Balance. While this may seem confusing, I have investigated the different products Tony has suggested in his presentations.

Before studying green drinks and the acid alkaline forming foods, I think the use of these words, "acid and alkaline" as related to health, the blood and body, should be thoroughly understood. There is a lot of confusing information on the web regarding Supergreens, supreme greens and Tony's inner balance. Let's first examine that the various divisions of the digestive system have different chemical reactions, that is.. they are either acid or alkaline.

Starting with your mouth, you will find that the saliva is alkaline, Dr. Robert Young speaks thoroughly about this in his presentation. The stomach is normally acid due to the presence of hydrochloric acid, which is essential to promote the digestive juices. The strength of the acid varies with the kind of foods eaten, because some foods stimulate the formation of hydrochloric acid. There may be hyperacidity (increased acidity) or hypoacidity (decreased acidity), but the stomach is always acidic for the most part to digest food.

The small intestine, throughout its entire length of twenty feet, is alkaline in reaction, because many digestive juices are alkaline.

The above reactions are fixed and established with a permanency. Urine, however, varies in reaction according to the health of the individual and according to the diet followed. In high fevers and certain chronic diseases, the urine contains a strong concentration of acid. When one eats a diet high in proteins, more especially of the animal foods, the urine becomes highly acid. Alkaline reactions are found in the urine of vegetarians.

Now, to discuss foods, we wish to make plain the fact that there is a great difference between ACID FOODS and ACID-FORMING FOODS. For example, the citrus fruits are truly ACID FOODS because they contain citric acid. Many fruits contain acids of other kinds. Many vegetables contain acid. Proteins contain amino acids. Acids are numerous in nature, and we cannot and should not avoid them in foods.
The above facts are ones that should be understood so there is no confusion in the mind of the person who speaks of “being acid" or of “being alkaline." None of the above factors determine whether one “is acid" or “is alkaline."
Finally, to explain how foods influence the acidity and alkalinity of the body: During the process of digestion food changes their chemistry. Energy is derived from foods by oxidation, similar to the burning of fuel in the stove. And, as in a stove, there is always an ash or residue. The residue which occurs in the human body as a result of burning of foods is termed an “ash" and has a definite chemical reaction. Some foods leave an “acid ash" and therefore known as “acid-forming foods." Other foods leave an “alkaline ash" and are therefore known as “alkaline-forming foods." The reason why these foods leave an acid residue or ash is because the acid forming elements are present in larger amounts than the alkaline makers. The phosphorous and sulfur in the proteins, when burned give acids, the one phosphoric acid and the other sulfuric acid.

To clarify this point, remember that the acid and alkaline reaction occurs AFTER digestion and assimilation, and these terms do not indicate the chemistry of the foods BEFORE digestion. Hence, do not assume that acid foods are acid- forming foods they are not.
